Some families are cat people, some dog people...some don't care for pets at all. Our family loves dogs. We are huge dog people. Our dogs are apart of our family.
Below is the email I sent on 10-15-07; The day our Amos died. He had just turned 1 year old on Oct 4. Today, is Feb 3, 2008, and still tears come to my eyes when reading over this note I sent.
Amos was such an integral part of our lives.
Still now, I recall the emotions I felt all day long, waiting for the 2 younger kids to get out of school and for Elliot to get back to his apartment from Law School. I still remember being completely unable to control my emotions the entire day. I wept most of the day. Honestly, I hadn't cried that hard since my one of my closest friends died in 2000. Odd....I realized she died in Oct, too.
Andrew was the first to tell. He got out of school first. When he got in the car he knew something was wrong. Our drive home was silent. When Jessica got home, Andrew and I were sitting on the sofa. She sat down next to me and just screamed when I told her. I held her and we all wept together. I contacted Elliot's roommate and asked he call me and let me know the moment Elliot walked in the door. Around 6:30 I got the call. Elliot said nothing when I told him. I kept apologizing over and over ( Amos was really his dog. He had left him in my care because he wasn't going to have the time to take care of him being he was in school ). I felt so bad for him that I couldn't be there to hold him. Finally, Elliot asked if he could hang up and be alone. My heart was broken....missing Amos...and for the 3 kids....having to go thru this grief.
The rest of our evening was spent sitting on the sofa...holding one another....petting Brady (who we were allowed to pick up at 5:30...He only had superficial wounds) Carona.
Below is the email I sent to our friends that evening, Oct 15, 2007.
AMOS LEE
OCT 4, 2006 - OCT 15, 2007
Through tears and deep sadness, I wanted to let you guys know.... 2 of our dogs ( Amos and Brady ), were hit by a truck, this morning. Amos was killed instantly, and Brady sustained some internal injuries, which are not life threatening... We are devastated !!!
I had just gotton home from work at American Express. As normal, I let the 2 dogs out of the kennel and they were playing tag with one another in the back yard...running in large circles...knocking each other over...and taking off and running in the opposite direction. The dogs always played in the back yard.
At the same time, my parents had arrived to help paint the shutters on the house...and they were taking some supplies out of their car and setting them on the sidewalk....The dogs were still in the back yard. I even commented to them how much the 2 dogs liked one another. I told my mom, I was going to run in the house real quick to change into "painting clothes". I had not even gotten to the bedroom, when my mom came running in the house, yelling for me.
When I got outside, Brady was bloody and limping from the road.....My dad was at Amos' side, shaking his head and saying that "He was gone".
I just can't believe how quickly it happened. I just can't believe both dogs were hit !!
My dad stayed at the house to bury Amos, while my mom and I rushed Brady to the Vet.
How do you tell your children, someone they love has died !!! Through tears and hugs, I was able to tell Jessica and Andrew....However, I had to tell Elliot over the phone, being he's in NYC, in law school.
Amos had just turned 1 year old on Oct 4. He was Elliot's dog, whom Jessica "took over" when Elliot left for law school.
Brady, primarily, is Andrew's dog.
No matter....Both dogs were apart of our Crazy family !!
We will miss you AMOS !!!!
